7 Effective Copywriting Tips for Marketing Your Business
Tip # 1 - KISS: Keep it simple stupid
One of the first things to remember when planning any new marketing material is that the point of the piece of writing is to sell. It is not all about looking pretty or being clever. If people find your piece funny, but they do not get your message, it has been a waste of your energy and money. The point of writing this piece in the first place is to sell…to sell your business idea, to sell your service or to sell your product. The simpler the writing and the clearer the message, the more effective the material becomes.
Tip # 2 - Be authentic
If you are honest in your communications, it will reflect positively upon your business. Don’t try to dazzle people with big words. Just stay focused on what you do well, and how it will benefit the reader. If you start to stray, read tip # 1 again.
Tip # 3 - Make your message consistent
Each time you write, whatever format it is in, keep your message consistent. Don’t keep changing your focus, or your clients will get confused. Keep the focus on the key benefits of using your product or service and customers will soon get the message.
Tip # 4 - Include a ‘Call to Action’
OK, so you have enticed your reader with a simple flyer with an authentic, consistent message…now what do they do? Well, you need to make the next step obvious to the reader…
"Call Elite Virtual Executives today on…”
"Head to our website to see how a Virtual Assistant can benefit your business…”
"Mention this coupon to get 10% off your first copywriting project…” etc etc.
If you don’t give potential clients an obvious and simple opportunity to make contact with your business, they may go somewhere else.
Tip # 5 - Work with a copywriter
Unless you have a knack for writing marketing materials, it is wise to work with a copywriter to research and write your materials. It is often useful to have someone outside of the business do the research and copywriting, to bring a fresh perspective to the message.
Tip # 6 - Spell checker is not good enough
If you have written the piece yourself, you need to find someone who is willing to edit and proofread your piece. Do not rely on spell check, or grammar check; they are notoriously unreliable.
Tip # 7 - Be patient!
Remember that there is often a lag between the time you market your business and the time the client takes action – so don’t think that your marketing efforts have been unsuccessful if you don’t get an immediate response.
