Good morning and welcome to the latest issue of Petite Elite, the newsletter from Elite Virtual Executives. This issue’s topic comes from my own experience with dealing with stress, after a very busy and challenging few months. Whether you are under the pump at work, dealing with family issues or planning a wedding (wink wink), there are many ways you can help yourself get through stressful times, improve your mental health and become a more effective business owner and member of your community.
I hope you find this information useful, and I do invite you all to take some time for yourself, try some of these de-stressing activities and see if you notice an improvement in your wellbeing and business performance. After all, if we don’t take time to look after ourselves, we are no good to anybody else. And, don't forget, if you have STRESSFUL work that you want to outsource, be it copywriting, proofreading or administration, we can help. Just contact us to discuss your business needs.
If you have a clear understanding of what stresses you out, you have more of a chance of controlling those triggers. Start to write down the times when you are most stressed. What time of the day is it? What is going on around you? Who are you with? What are you doing? What are you thinking about? As patterns start to form in your observations you will become armed with a treasure chest of information on how you can combat your stressors. You will be able to delegate those tasks that you clearly can't manage, or don't enjoy. You will be able to pinpoint the best times of the day to tackle more difficult tasks. You will work out which people to avoid in times of stress. All of this information is at your fingertips; you just have to start paying attention!
I don't know about you, but I really notice the difference between days when I exercise and days when I don't. When we exercise, we are more alert, more motivated and we sleep more soundly at night. All of these positive results point toward working to the best of your ability and serving your clients in the most effective way possible. And whether you like to thrash it out at the gym on your lunch break or take a peaceful walk, it's all doing your stress levels some good. So get away from your desk for at least half an hour a day to get your body moving!
Your mind is bombarded all day, every day with millions of pieces of information that it needs to attend to, define and process. 'Information overload' is not simply a cliche, it is very real and it is not conducive to efficient work. Exercise your mind so it is prepared to filter through this information, take what is important and discard the rest. Meditation is an effective way to exercise your mind and to learn to ignore the 'chatter' in your mind. If meditation is not your thing, perhaps a 'Time Management' workshop would give you the tools necessary to sort though your busy mind's schedule. Whatever it takes, it is imperative that you exercise your mind to produce your best work. You'll find you are more creative and more able to think outside the box when you're faced with a problem to solve.
Don't reach for the wine or cigarettes after a stressful day; your body will not have a chance to rest properly after a busy day with nicotine and alcohol in your system. Instead, make sure that your freezer, fridge and pantry are stocked full with healthy food that you can easily whip up after work to give your body the sustenance it really NEEDS to rest, relax and then start all over again the next day! Fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, grains, legumes...you've heard it all before. The reason we hear about these foods so often is that they are what our body needs, and you KNOW you feel better for eating them, which is what it is all about.
As a business owner who works solo most of the time, I often CRAVE human connection. I miss bouncing ideas off people and being a part of a team. It becomes stressful sitting alone, working on difficult problems. That's when it is important to pick up the phone and talk to someone about what you are stressing over. A simple chat or de-brief with a friend or business associate can be all it takes to relieve that strain. And you never know, you may just find the solution you were looking for.
